The Power of Mindful Movement

Hello,

By now you will already know how much I believe in enjoying movement for the sake of movement itself not for the before-and-after-photos.

For as long as I can remember, however, the fitness industry has remained obsessed with results and attaining a ‘perfect’ zero-body-fat look.

The problem with this is that it reduces good health to a matter of aesthetics and weight loss when in reality it is so much more. Health is way more than a number on a scale. The key to healthy bio-mechanics, and an injury-free and energetic life, is to learn to move in the right way and to build strength from the inside.

For me, the intention behind Beyond Move was to create a genuinely inclusive space, offering nourishing low-impact full-body workouts, where the emphasis is placed on the mental benefits of regular movement.

Moreover, I had discovered in my work with people living with neurological conditions like Parkinson's’ Disease or Multiple Sclerosis that combining the disciplines of Peto’s method with Pilates had brought about really positive change in the lives of my clients.

And so, Peto Pilates was born!

What is Peto Pilates?

In the 1940’s Professor Andras Peto, the Hungarian physician founded what is known as ‘conductive education’, which recognises motor disorders as learning disabilities rather than a condition that needs to be treated solely medically. The remedy, he concluded, is task oriented and ought to take into account the learning needs those with movement conditions have. Peto Pilates combines the wisdom of Peto’s conductive education with the skill and precision of Pilates, and I provide group and individual sessions throughout the week at the studio.

Of course, it should be obvious that people with movement conditions ought to ...well, move! But what is happening is that mainstream gyms and facilities are essentially failing to cater at all to this group of people.

That’s why we are so proud to genuinely be able to say at Beyond Move that we have beginner all the way to experienced movers, in our small and intimate sessions. Participants come from all walks and stages of life, and we all come to move in the same space. Where people need special attention, maybe for those who are pre- or postnatal, teens, post-operative or suffering from neurological conditions we have the ability to support your needs.

What sets our classes apart from the rest?

While my area of expertise is in Pilates and Peto Pilates, the studio also offers Yoga and Barre. I make sure that the teachers I work with understand the importance of not just cardiovascular health but also spinal health. We are interested in functional movement, which uses body-weight resistance and provides workouts that give clients the feeling of being stretched as well as worked.

The emphasis is on balanced low-impact, full-body workouts. When done right, this style of exercise is very effective at protecting students from injury, and in the meantime, strengthens the core, mobilises the spine and builds the foundations.

There’s a particular focus on being present. We care not a jot, as the Brits would say, about your leotards and crop tops; we just want you to get into your own world and enjoy the movements. When movement is carried out in this way, with joy and mindfulness, the evidence suggests it has the power to heal.

Celebrating Small Wins

Here is a reminder to focus on ‘the real’. True positive transformation is made up of small wins that consistently rack up and lead to big change over the course of many months and even years. Worrying, negative self-talk and stressing probably has never improved any situation, on or off the mat. However, when I feel balanced and centred everything is manageable. I think it comes down making time to acknowledge and celebrate our small wins, because if you don’t, you’ll feel like you’re never making any progress. If we celebrate the journey it makes the destination all the more sweeter.

by Noemi Nagy-Bhavsar

I don't know about you, but every year around Halloween and the season of fireworks (or perhaps because it’s also the time of my birthday), the anticipation of the year's end starts sinking in, and I feel like I am running out of time. I am sure I am not alone in these thoughts.

As we get ready for another exciting winter holiday season filled with friends and family, travel and present shopping, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed. Personally, I am beginning to feel like I am a juggling clown! What makes it all the worse is that most of the time, I don't even realise I'm stressed and living in my future plans.

We are programmed to be in a constant state of constructing the past or the future in the mind, and tend to leave present awareness for emergencies. But if we take time to notice the present we realise that the contentedness we seek is right here! When I move during my self- practice and when I teach (and I hope you feel the same when you take part in classes) I find myself enjoying the moment I’m in.

One of the most wonderful benefits of regular mindful exercise is that the observations we make on the mat, apply to our lives off the mat. How many of us can honestly say they have never felt frustrated with their progress? Most likely all people at some time wonder if they will ever be able to attain a goal/ posture/perform a particular exercise comfortably.

But with persistence and humility we do improve. Which brings us neatly to the Beyond Move Xmas Party on November 25. Come along and celebrate how far you’ve come!

Release, Rest & Recharge

Focus on the benefit of release

When an emotion is not fully processed, or we are not entirely ready to release some fear or anxiety, it can become stored in the body.

During Pilates and Yoga, our movements become more profound, allowing us to release unnecessary tension and, therefore also, trapped emotions. This release can come in many forms, often crying or the opposite, laughing.

Release, Rest & Recharge

There is always a lot to explain in class. Personally, I mainly focus on the technicality and allow the participants to experience what is happening within them for themselves, rather than suggesting what ‘should’ be happening. While precision is crucial, if we bring awareness to the internal processes as well, it can bring a wonderful sense of well-being and also really speed up our progress.

So let’s focus on the benefit of release.

When an emotion is not fully processed, or we are not entirely ready to release some fear or anxiety, it can become stored in the body.

Modern life puts us under a lot of stress. We clench our jaws and even our buttocks! We stoop, slouching the shoulders, chin jutting forward. Without even being conscious of it we tighten our hips and pelvic floors to suppress emotions.

What is happening to us during Pilates & Yoga?

In class, we invite you to stop gripping, clenching and tightening but rather to connect to your muscles, nerve endings, breath and ultimately to yourself.

Physiologically, all exercise releases endorphins, which interact with serotonin and dopamine, the chemicals that impact mood. More specifically during the practices of both Pilates and Yoga, we connect our breathing to the activation of our deeper core muscles. This triggers the ‘relaxation response’ in the body.

As our emotions are calmed we feel more grounded and more aware of how we are moving. The quality of our movements becomes more profound, allowing us to release unnecessary tension and therefore also trapped emotions. This release can come in many forms, often crying or the opposite, laughing.

Knowing that this is happening, is half the battle. So how can we support ourselves to truly experience these subtle processes?

  1. Listen to your breath. Be curious about how your breath can soften and release muscle tension. Take deep breaths and slow exhalations, to allow the parasympathetic nervous system, and therefore the muscles, to respond.

  2. Be gentle and slow down. I always say this in class during stretching. Rapid, sharp movements can make things worse.

  3. Pay attention to yourself. Try not to look at what others are doing on their mat. Comparing yourself to others is not helpful. Where are you are holding unnecessary tension? Observation is the first step to becoming more fluid in your movements. And with fluid movements comes an abundance of benefits!

Motivational

Resting and relaxing are essential parts of our lives, but before you know it you can go from just taking a break to having no energy and losing your motivation. Everyone experiences a lack of motivation, so why not share our tips and tricks on how to get ourselves back in the headspace to get things done.

The Magic is in YOU

The Magic is in YOU

So here are 5 motivational tips to keep exercising;

  • Make it fun. Find sports or activities that you enjoy, then vary the routine to keep it interesting whether it's a run, a swim or pilates or a yoga class ;-).

  • Make physical activity part of your daily routine.

If it's hard to find time for exercise, don't fall back on excuses. Try and plan at least 30 minutes every day.

  • Join forces with friends, neighbours or others. You're not in this alone. Invite friends or co-workers to join you when you exercise

  • Reward yourself. After each exercise session, take a few minutes to savour the good feelings that exercise gives you. This type of internal reward can help you make a long-term commitment to regular exercise

  • Be flexible. If you're too busy to work out or simply don't feel up to it, take a day or two off. Go easy on yourself if you need a break. The important thing is to get back on track as soon as you can.

SOUND HEALING with HEART OPENING GUIDED MEDITATION

Sound Healing & Cacao Event

This offering is an opportunity to come together and focus on our self-care.

We’ll drop out of our heads and into our bodies for a gentle restorative sound journey – with crystal bowls and other healing sounds.

What do bring and prepare:

⭐ Try not to eat or drink anything heavy, if possible, an hour before we start, so your body isn’t using all its energy for digestion during the session.

⭐ Bring a blanket, pillow, or cushions as you’ll be on the floor lying down for most of the time – so please bring something for your own comfort and so you feel warm. You can even bring an eye mask if you’d like to deepen the experience.

Date:
Book your space

Our next event is on 16th July at 7pm

We are back this month with a soothing relaxing evening of Sound healing and this time with a beautiful guided meditation

The theme for this event is coming into the heart.

We very often find ourselves caught up with the practicalities of life and don’t get the opportunity to have some time out in our days or week to just be without all the to-do lists.

It means we can often spend a lot of time in our heads and can get quite congested up there.

It can feel hard to unwind and connect with how we really feel and we forget how to be more in our heart space.

There is a lot of new information about ‘heart coherence’ in modern science.

‘’In a few words, heart coherence focuses on the fact that when the heart is allowed to guide the body and the mind, great things can be achieved. More importantly, the state of heart coherence can give you access to better health, both physically and mentally. But the benefits go far beyond what you can ever imagine.’’ https://www.gaiameditation.com/heart-coherence/

How amazing is this?

When we’re in this space it can really support our emotional agility and help us create more of what we want and need in life and in our relationships.

This event is an opportunity to pause; and unwind, into our bodies; to create the space in our hearts and receive the benefits of the experience.

So that perhaps we can leave feeling lighter in the mind and centred in the heart.

The Sound Journey :

This is designed and played to be a soothing sound journey with the use of crystal bowls & some percussion instruments to aid you into a state of deep rest. The Crystal bowls are tuned to the natural frequencies of the bodies energetic field - what they call the Chakra’s in Indian yogic systems.

Sound healing is an ancient healing modality -used in most spiritual traditions & lineages

soothe our energy body by cleansing any emotional blockages

Benefits it can support you with :

⭐ Relaxing the nervous system,

⭐ Supporting to reduce stress & anxiety

⭐ Support with reducing blood pressure & boosting the immune system.

⭐ Promotes stillness and well being for your heart and soul.

How to prepare & what to bring :

⭐ Try not to eat or drink anything heavy if possible an hour before we start

⭐ Bring a blanket/pillow/cushions as you will be on the floor lying down for most of the time, so please bring something for your own comfort and so you feel warm. You can even bring an eye mask if you wish to deepen the experience.

WHY about neurological conditions/ movement disorders?

A personal insight why Noemi - the founder of Beyond Move is so passionate about helping and working with people with movement disorders, living with long life conditions.

WHY about neurological conditions/ movement disorders?

Alert! This might be long!

I was about 9 or 10 in this picture, and you perhaps can see that my grandad’s facial expression is a little motionless. That is because he had Parkinson’s disease (secondary Parkinsonism) at that time. He deteriorated quickly, but I didn’t see him that way.

As a child I was a daydreamer... and I pretended to be his teacher 💙 because everyone felt clueless. No one knew what to do and how to help him. He was trapped in his body.

And oh god, he did everything for me! I mean whatever I asked him; he gave it a go. Climbing up on a bicycle - and I timed him and recorded his progress too 😆 We went swimming, exercised by walking up & down on stairs 💕 at a later stage I gave him his medication and also helped feeding him.

I was a kind ‘teacher’, I massaged his back after exercise and we also over listened to some kind of Russian healer/meditation tape - parallel translated to Hungarian and 99% we ended up with a nap 💤

You must feel from this that I felt so special, so so special & empowered!

And of course this memory stayed with me. I felt like a Whisperer - you know who understands wild horses and guides them 💕

Life guided me to study at the international Peto Institute (instead of studying psychology). This training and practice helped me to gain knowledge and understanding of movement disorders and how to help people living with these conditions to keep moving, stay motivated, active and independent!

So this was the first why and the initiation to start Beyond Move. We want to make accessible and great classes for all, including people with physical disabilities.

We want people to feel confident, move well and stay independent!

With Love,

Noemi x

Exercise of the Month - November

EXERCISE OF THE MONTH

I LOVE this exercise! Once you do it in the right 'way'; is pretty strong.

Especially great for hypermobility (you can add a loop around your ankle or tights). It's a great swimming combo and many of you have tried this with me this month!

Add a little bit of body text.jpg

Starting position:

  • Four-point kneeling, hands are right angles

  • Right forearm down, across

  • Hips levelled and hipbones on each side are facing down

  • Imagine there is a box underneath of your chest and you keep your neck and chest lifted

  • Also, lift your ribcage and engage your diaphragm (the muscles underneath your ribcage)

  • Engage your centre (pelvic floor & deep transverses abdominal)

Exercise:

  • Take a breath in

  • Exhale and extend slowly your left leg - without changing on your trunk and pelvis position

  • Inhale, pull the leg back into starting position - repeat it 6x

  • Once you get used to the movement - add leg lifting.

  • Of course, repeat this on the other side!

See you soon, and stay safe during the lockdown.

About Gut Health - Immune system Boost

Gut Health

How to boost your immune system

Before the coronavirus pandemic, like most of us, you probably only ever thought about your immune system when the winter cold season hit. But with experts telling us how crucial a healthy immune system is in our fight against covid-19, immunity is a really hot topic. You might have heard that our gut and our immune system are inextricably linked. But the truth is that, for the most part, the two are not only linked but actually the same.

Therefore, more and more evidence shows that looking after our gut is a great way to achieve and experience wellbeing. The microbiome, which is made up of bacteria & other microorganisms in the stomach and intestines (or informally the gut) is now understood to be responsible for more than just our digestive system. Everyone’s microbiome is unique, but there are a few generalities about what is healthy or not, and in healthy people, there tends to be a diverse array of organisms.

Here at Beyond Move, we are really interested in gut health and as we teach Peto Pilates for people affected with Parkinson’s disease, in the recent emerging research. Researchers have for the first time discovered a biological link between the gut microbiome and this research reveals its more likely for Parkinson’s disease origins to have come from the gut and not only from the brain as previously believed. Often long before tremors may be reported to GP’s other complaints linked to the digestive system have been mentioned regularly and in many cases, years before the tremors have started.

Generally speaking, good gut health benefits everyone and paying attention to what we eat and drink and the effects this has on our own microbiome seems ever more important especially so now with the global pandemic.  We are all about our community and sharing information.  We have pulled together some general tips for good gut health here and some web links for you to find out further information.

  1. Exercise. This aids general health helps towards maintaining a healthy weight and in some cases, also helps manage stress levels.

  2. Eat healthily. Yes, it’s ok to have a treat but balancing fibre, fresh vegetables, sources of protein and fruit help to get vital vitamins and nutrients. Additionally, eating fermented foods such as sauerkraut or kimchi regularly promotes the production of friendly bacteria in the gut.

  3. Drink. It’s no news that most of us do not drink enough water, and when coming to class, we encourage you to bring water. Other sources that will help you maintain a healthy gut are to drink Kombucha a fizzy fermented tea drink or Kefir (milk or vegan water-based) which we stock in the studio.

I do hope you don’t mind me calling you this, but I think it is such a perfect positive name for all of you; how special you are and what a big part of my community you represent.

What a month we have just had. As lockdown progressed our virtual world, here at the studio, seemed to get busier and our online community continues to grow through Instagram and Facebook. If you have not joined us there yet please do! We post news, free exercise videos, live chats about movement and we have a small but perfect little webshop on there too.

Because we are a small- independent-female-founded-business (wow, what a mouthful) your support means the world. We are a studio that prides itself on how different we are compared with the bigger gym chains.  I love what we do and am really proud of our specialised classes for pre- and post-natal mums and those with neurological disorders. If you know anyone who might benefit from these please pass our information on. Your help in making our community brighter, bigger and more inclusive is so much appreciated.

Studio Opening News

We are looking to open our physical doors again on 3rd August 2020. I have worked flatout to make the space work better and I got us some wonderful colourful reminders from another small business to ensure safe distance in class.

We will, for the time being, focus on even smaller classes than usual which will really benefit you in several ways as the teachers have more time to focus on supporting you individually as well as correcting your posture during class, to enable you to have greater awareness and learning.

We will also continue with some of our online classes too.

Summer Holiday & Timetable

I cannot wait to open the studio doors though it must be said that I’m ready for a holiday. I don’t know about you, but I need to get some essential rest and family time soon and have booked to go and visit my family in Hungary between 20th July and 31st July.

I have organised cover with our other much-loved teachers for a lot of my classes but there will be a reduced timetable during this time.

Any other last-minute changes will be published on the website, so do consult this too not avoid disappointment.

Book your class

New Membership

As I alluded to in May’s newsletter the membership structure is changing. As of the 1st of September 2020, new memberships will be available. There will be 2 types:

  • A 6-week block of classes / 6-week course of specialised classes (pre/post-natal, Peto Pilates)

  • BM Tribe membership

I really hope that you will continue to be part of the Beyond Move story going forward and appreciate your support. I am utterly grateful for you all sticking by me during this difficult time and its been a pleasure to continue the studio during what is a stressful time for many.

In other news…

The studio has been accepted onto the This Girl Can Campaign. I am literally so excited about this and hope that we too will be part of the national campaign in promoting girls to take up physical activity.

I am hopeful to put one of our beautiful patrons with cerebral palsy onto our poster as so often we forget that people with disabilities probably need exercise even more. I am however open to all your suggestions and feel free to share how we can make the best use of our voice….

Reopening the Studio - getting closer

REOPENING IS GETTING CLOSER

Hello Beyonders,

Hello Beyonders,

It’s Noemi here!

Can I just say WOW, this is our 10th week of streaming classes online, and we are having such an interesting time? Initially, it was so strange for the studio doors to be shut and to be honest, I cannot wait for them to reopen soon.

Thank you all for keeping us busy, navigating and learning this new online landscape. We have continued to really enjoy teaching you all, though of course, we miss seeing you in person. In my heart, I hope that we as a studio have been able to give you a variety of classes, keeping you sane, motivated, and engaged during this lockdown. It has been a complete rollercoaster, don’t you think?

My gratitude is with you all who believed in us, and all who sent us lovely messages and well wishes, week on week. I also want to express my appreciation of your commitment, and I am so impressed that some of you pushed through many physical and psychological barriers during this time. In our online classes, we aimed to help you feel confident, reassured and to continue as much as usual as possible.

We are so thankful to see familiar and new faces in our online classes. Yes, online classes are not for everyone, and some of you prefer the discipline and companionship of coming to the studio, but we also have 1 st hand experienced that for some of our client groups and classes working-out at home really works! Who knew?!

We found for example that hosting our Peto pilates classes online meant that those with Parkinson’s Disease, Cerebral palsy and MS can attend regardless of address and by not being London based, makes the availability of support less of a postcode lottery. How beautiful is that?

When we finally reopen the doors to the studio, we hope to continue to keep some classes online on for a while as I believe this is still one of the safest ways at this present time, and maybe for some, it might be the new reality going forward.

Current timetable - please check here

Memberships

You may be wondering what will happen to your membership once we reopen. We are working hard behind the scenes to make sure that our memberships will continue to work for everyone and can accommodate the studio as well as online classes. Bear with us.

We will inform you in good time should there be are any changes which may affect your current terms. It is so important to us to be open and honest with you and for us to let you know what we are planning. During lockdown, we have learnt that as a small independent business and a new studio, we must be agile; change with the needs of the time and you, our valued customers.

Of course, it all must work for us too, and we want to be a studio that is creative in how we support you all as well as keeping you safe. We love hearing your feedback and ideas about reopening the studio but also about our classes, what you would like to see more or less of. Please as members or pay as you go, participants, you can help us shape the studio so do let us know!

We are social

We have invested in really upping our game on social media in line with our online presence and to help make us a dynamic studio. Our Instagram account is fun, shares the latest class schedules and even has a small shop for props and to buy one-off classes. We are doing our best to keep you all posted and informed, and if you don’t already follow us make sure to sign up to our Facebook page, follow and like us on Instagram @beyond_move.

If socials are not your thing or you want to receive us in your inbox too do also make sure we have your correct email address. We will soon be sharing news about reopening as well as class schedules and any changes we may make so please do keep an eye on all the above.

Here is our brief Covid-19 guide

Lots of love,

Noemi

COVID-19 GUIDANCE

COVID-19 GUIDANCE

We're following government guidelines and new social distancing requirements which means we will have to limit the number of people that are in the studio at any given time.

Additionally, we will make our communal space a one-way-system and as we will have to measure numbers of people you might be asked to wait outside or in your car until the exact start time of your class or appointment. Please do not let this deter you from coming; we will make sure brollies are available in case of rain and should you be early for class.

We always aimed to be a clean studio, but now more than ever do we need to make sure we do this to the highest possible standards. But we are in this together.

We will make sure

  • To increase our cleaning and sanitation procedures between classes, before and after the day

  • To keep classes & class structure small to allow for social distancing

  • Increase space between mats & participants

  • The teachers will be wearing facemasks

  • Supply sanitiser to clean your hands with upon entry to the studio

  • Payments will be online and or contactless for your convenience

We will ask you

  • To book your class online at your earliest convenience to avoid disappointment

  • To bring your own mat props to class

  • To sanitise your hands upon entry to the studio

Thank you,

Noemi - BM founder

WE ARE OPEN!!

Wow! We opened on Monday - 5 days ago, and what a week it has been. I am at home, sitting down, feeling grateful in a happy bubble. I am truly amazed and thankful to you all, especially to those of you who put your trust in me by booking classes and memberships without even knowing me. I couldn’t believe that the second day’s evening class was fully booked. I hope that those of you that attended, enjoyed it.

The love, the support, the interest we have received in this short amount of time is so wonderful and it will surely encourage me to open my wings more. I always wanted to create a warm and supporting community hub with a unique twist and can’t wait to bring it more alive as we grow. I really feel we are on the right direction.

In the meantime I have promised myself that I am not going to be hard on myself, so I can be present and enjoy the journey. As you can imagine; starting a new business can be challenging. There are things which aren’t flawless and there are mistakes I have and will continue to make, but without my mistakes, I wouldn’t have come so far.

Next week, we will be joined by Beth; a beautiful soul, who I am honoured to have teaching at Beyond Move. On Tuesday 14th January at 20:30 she will be leading a meditation taster (free) session for 30 minutes. If you are booked into the Pilates & Stretch class at 19:30, this can be a lovely extension to your session. You can also join the class when it begins. We want to show you how amazingly important it is to connect the body and mind together. I am ever so thankful for her time and knowledge.

Please stay tuned, we have much more to come.

See you all next week!

Noemi  :-)
